Moving into the late 20th century, WW-2 had just ended and dropped a lot of young men and women back into the country with new found abilities to afford their own homes via the GI bill.  This huge demand caused the housing booms that resulted all cross the country.  The good thing was that these homes were inexpensive but the negative was that the tract home was born.  thousands of cookie cutter sameness soon dotted the land almost everywhere people were interested in living.  This in turn drove the need for some type of distinction to make the new homes somehow different and a statement of their new owners.  The age of home decorating had finally come to the working class.

A home is cozier and more comfortable than any other place. We build our homes with the utmost care and sincerity. After all, it is a place where we spend most of our lives. Home decorating means a lot to the owner. It also demands hard work and devotion, as it is not an easy task. Decorating includes both the interior as well as exterior aspects.

Initially, home decorating started off simply as changing the paint or wallpaper but has led to a boom in furnishings, artwork, collectibles and even flooring materials.  Just the range of available flooring options is incredible.  You can choose from marble, granite tiles, bricks, slates, concrete, or steel. To add more color, suitable carpets can be spread. Rugs can be used to complement them.  So before, basic flooring was acceptable, in our quest for making our home truly ours, we have needed to remodel, rebuild, rework and otherwise redesign almost everything in our homes.

Walls, pillars, and other standouts can be decorated using artifacts, paintings or wall hangings. Modern art is becoming a common choice.  And it’s not just the living room, but every part of the home now gets the star treatment.  This includes, new rooms for babies, teens, young adults, toddlers and children.

In the end, what we really want is to open the door after a hard days work and say….Home at Last!

Home improvement projects can be budgeted and planned. A person can feel and see if his house needs remodeling and renovation. Home owners can also opt to buy cheaper alternatives for home decorations by buying items that are on sale or pre-owned.

Truthfully, the only difference between you and home decorating experts is time. If you’ll invest a little more time in reading, you’ll be that much nearer to expert status when it comes to home decorating.

3. Purchase inexpensive tools and materials needed for home improvement and decoration. Estimate the expenses that will be incurred by the remodeling and decoration of the home. It is important to use a budget so that you have an idea of how much money will be needed and spent for the remodeling.

4. Assess your skills in styling and decorating before starting the project: if the task requires a high level of artistry that you do not possess the end result may not be the one you desired and you may spend even more money to correct the work.

5. If the last option is to hire a professional interior designer, determine his background and work experience before hiring. Consider designers who are referred by a friend or by your neighbors. You can ask for discounts and/or alternative materials to be used that are within your budget.

6. Consider the size of the house before buying furniture. Rearranging the furniture can be the cheapest way to decorate your home. Instead of buying a sofa, consider buying two loveseats especially if space is limited.

7. Determine the specific areas where repairs are needed: repairs can range from leaking pipes, clogged drains, to minor carpentry repairs. These repairs are easily done and can be fixed without hiring technicians, plumbers, or carpenters that may charge large fees. When decorating the home, it is not necessary to do all the parts of the house. Most people focus on the living room, kitchen, and dining room. In decorating the kitchen, buying refrigerator magnets, hand towels, or dishcloths at a discount is easy. Buying wholesale, when possible, will give the buyer huge discounts in comparison to buying in retail stores.

Everyone loves a nice appearing home because it reflects the personality of the homeowner. Going home at the end of long working day is worth looking forward to if the home is pleasant and orderly.

1. Inexpensive sources for fabric for decorating a room include using flat sheets from discount stores, quilts and tablecloths from yard sales (or your own linen closet!) or the discount table at any fabric store.

2. If you want to add pattern to a room with fabric, here is a no fail guideline. Use a solid, and stripe, and a small-medium scale pattern. Let each of the three fabrics share at least one color. Finally, distribute the pattern throughout the room following the 60/30/10 rule…Use your primary fabric, (usually the solid) in 60% of the room, the next fabric in 30% of the room, and the last fabric throughout 10% of the room.

3. Heavy pinch pleat draperies are long since passé. Use lighter rod pocket curtains to soften your windows. Twin flat sheets can fit most average windows with nothing more than a rod pocket sewn in! Make sure the curtains draw completely clear of the windows to let the most possible amount of light into the room. Also, consider hanging the curtain rod near the ceiling line instead of right above the window…it adds height and dimension to a room, making it look larger!

4. Simple throw pillows are easy and cheap to make, and can even be changed out with the seasons! Use them to add comfort to any room in your home…even the outdoor ones! Add a simple throw, and any corner of your room becomes a hideaway.

5. Stitch up placemats, tablecloths, and runners to soften the hard furniture in the room. If you don’t sew, you can use iron on hem tape to make your creations. It’s inexpensive, and can be found in the sewing aisle of any discount store, or at your local fabric shop.

6. Use existing fabrics such as pretty quilts and unused sheets to create layered table covers. It adds instant romance to any room! Check out thrift shops and yard sales, or learn to make them on your own. Do a google search and find dozens of sites ready to help you learn to sew and quilt.

7. Use cheap muslin to add natural and romantic statements in a room. Twist and wrap yards of muslin around a curtain rod and let drape to the floor for a wonderful organic window treatment. You can simply tie a knot in the end to finish. If your budget is really pinched, you can use muslin to make your window treatments, then just add borders of your favorite fabric to save on yardage.
